[K-Culture] K-Drama Magic in Real Life: The Secret of the Sheep Head Towel? 🐑 The Ultimate LearnStay Guide to the Korean Jjimjilbang

Published:

Hello! We are LearnStay, here to make your time in Korea extraordinary and full of learning. 👋

Visiting a 'Jjimjilbang' (Korean bathhouse and sauna) is probably high on your Korea bucket list, right? Bubbling hot baths, various types of saunas, and delicious snacks! If you are a K-drama fan, you've probably fantasized about wearing a sheep-head towel and drinking sweet rice juice. 🥰

However, many people feel intimidated by the unique procedures and culture when they actually try to visit. "How do I change clothes?", "How do I make that sheep-head towel?" Don't worry! Today, we're sharing the ultimate guide to enjoying the Korean Jjimjilbang 100%, highly recommended by our LearnStay host families!

👕 1. From Entering to Changing, It's Easy! (Entrance & Changing)

When you first arrive, you take off your shoes, hand your shoe locker key to the front desk, and pay the entrance fee. You'll receive your Jjimjilbang outfit (a T-shirt and shorts) and towels. The number on your key is also your locker number! The most important part! Korean Jjimjilbangs are divided into gender-segregated bathhouses and communal sauna areas. Before heading to the communal sauna, you must shower and change in the gender-segregated bathhouse first! Your LearnStay host parents will kindly guide you, so there is no need to worry. 😉

♨️ 2. The Real Jjimjilbang Experience & The Sheep Head Towel (Sauna & Sheep Head Towel)

Now that you're in your Jjimjilbang outfit, it's time to enter the real sauna world! Sweat it out by moving between saunas of different temperatures (like the ice room or the red clay room). It is incredibly fun to lie down and relax in the spacious common area or practice your Korean with your host family.

And finally, the highlight everyone is curious about! Let's learn how to make the 'Sheep Head Towel' (Yangmeori).

  1. Fold the towel into thirds lengthwise.
  2. Roll the ends tightly inside.
  3. Put it on your head and slightly fluff the ends to look like sheep ears!

🥚 3. The Must-Try Culinary Experience (Snacks: Sikhye & Eggs)

After a good sweat, the highlight of the Jjimjilbang awaits: the food! Sweet and icy traditional 'Sikhye' (sweet rice beverage) and nutty 'baked eggs' are absolute must-haves! A sip of Sikhye instantly cools you down, and cracking a baked egg on your friend's or host family's head (gently!) is a playful tradition you can only experience in a Korean sauna.

It might feel unfamiliar at first, but don't worry! Even if you are a little clumsy, our LearnStay host families will always teach you Korean culture step by step with a warm smile.
